MATCH PREVIEW | Golcar United vs Pensitone Church (A)

The Village visit Penistone in mid-table clash

The Weavers play away again on Wednesday night, thankfully this time much closer than our 2-2 draw in Scunthorpe last week.

That game featured another goal for striker George Doyle, but a late foray forward from Bottesford brought about a leveller, leaving us with another tough-to-take point.

A chance to put the wrongs right presents itself tomorrow and a performance of a similar manner to last Tuesday could go a long way to doing so.

Penistone Church are a step up in opposition, currently in 11th. They were off the mark quick, looking like early promotion contenders after an unbeaten first six league games.

Since then a difficult October has dropped them down the table and their most recent result was a 3-0 loss to Sheffield FC.

The hosts are well established at this level being promoted from NCEL Division One, in 2016/17 and have remained in the Premier Division since.

A stellar 2018/19 season, in which they scored 112 goals, was they closest they've come to another promotion but they were edged out by Worksop Town who won the league.

Penistone Church are currently co-managed by Brett Lovell and John ‘Jubby’ Whitehead, who stayed on following the departure of previous co-manager Stephen Lenthall at the end of last season. Lenthall had been at the club for over 20 years before leaving.

Penistone have had a struggle to score goals this season, especially at home, only hitting the back of the net six times, in the league, at the Parker Roofing Memorial Ground. Top scorers Nathan Keightley and Samuel Scrivens have four each.

The Village have had no such problem, scoring 31 so far, and currently being the only side in the bottom half of the table with a positive goal difference.

Last season, we did the double over Penistone Church, the first meeting on the opening game of the season which finished 4-1 with goals from Alfie Wilkinson, Daniel Naidole and Ryan Hall.

The later meeting, around this time last year, finished 3-0 thanks to a Doyle brace, something he'll be looking to repeat to add to his twelve already.

It's safe to expect a tight game tomorrow- so get down to the ground and help power the lads on to an important three points!
