Golcar United had another stumble in their promotion push, losing 2-1 away at Eccleshill United, meaning The Weavers have won just 1 of their last 7 league games.
A lovely volley by Alfie Wilkinson in the first half was not enough as two second half goals on the break gave The Eagles the 3 points at Plumpton Park.
On a cold day in Bradford, Alfie Wilkinson got The Village faithful celebrating early. A clever effort from the left-hand side of the box found the far corner, which gave Wilkinson his 13th league goal of the season and for the second time this week, our number 10 had scored an early opener.
Golcar showed why there was 14 places between the two teams for the rest of the half. The backline stifled Eccleshill’s long ball centric attacks whilst The Weaver’s had multiple chances to double the lead, chances they would soon regret not finishing.
Eccleshill’s number one Jordan Moorehouse made a couple of fine stops from Oli Russon and Daniel Naidole, whilst Nicky Clee had a lovely effort go just over the bar as The Eagles were under siege in the final stages of the first half.
The hosts clearly had an inspirational team talk during the break by their manager Lee Elam and within three minutes they were level again. This time, a long ball over the top did work and Hass Gorji slotted past the onrushing Harry Stead.
The rest of the game was very scrappy, with neither side keeping the ball for prolonged periods of time as they were both desperate to take the victory. Ryan Hall had a good chance as he got the better of Eccleshill’s right back Jahro Parchment, but his effort was smothered by Moorehouse.
The Weavers continued to try and find a winner with Joe Clegg making a couple of darting runs from midfielder and it felt if we were to find a winner, our number 8 would have had to have played a big role in the goal.
However, the eventual winner came from Eccleshill. To the shock of no one, it came from a long ball down the channel with some excellent determination by one of their attackers led to Eccleshill progressing the ball and a cutback on the byline in the 18-yard box found Josh McKiernon and he cooly finished.
Despite our best efforts, there was no clear chance for Golcar to equalise in the final moments of the game and as the clouds began to become darker, the referee’s final whistle meant that The Weavers dark run of form is prolonged for at least another week.
