After early exits in both the FA Cup and FA Vase, a cup run could be on the cards for Golcar United.
A second trip to Barton Town in just over a month awaited Joe Scarz's side and it had to be better than last time.
Their last trip across the Humber Bridge to their oppenents ended in a 3-0 defeat but this time it was the League Cup second round. Could anything change?
Before the game, Barton Town sat in third place in the league table where Golcar were 17th. This was the Weavers' first game for 10 days and they won't play again for 11 days so a strong outfit was fielded in the League Cup. The Swans made some changes but at the end of the day, a team can only play what's out in front of them.
Golcar started the first half brightly and throughout the opening 45 minutes, Rico Kilbourn dominated Barton's right back George Dawber. An early cross was put into the box from the left hand side from Kilbourn and found the head of Callum Petch who converted but was controversially ruled out for offside.
Not long after in the tenth minute of play, Alfie Wilkinson fired the Weavers in front with fantastic strike after winning the second ball from a headed clearance of the Barton backline.
Another great finish made it 2-0 in the 20th minute as Petch scored his first goal since his return to the club. A fine bit of skill saw him cut back on his left foot and find the bottom left corner. It was certainly a dream start for the Village!
It continued to get even better for Golcar as ten minutes later, it was that man Petch again who added another to the scoreline! A great turn and a splendid ball from Daniel Naidole played Petch through who ended up one on one with Barton keeper Charlie Dixon-Brown. He rounded him and stroke home for his brace and Golcar's third!
At half time the Weavers led 3-0 and after the break, Barton came out a bit more organised with goalkeeper Harry Stead having a little more to do. However, in the 65th minute, a fourth was added and it was the Petch and Wilkinson show again with both players combining. Petch put a low cross into the box for Wilkinson to poke home and get his second. 4-0 to the Village!
Later on in the second half, their were red cards for Golcar's Wilkinson and Barton's Cody Collins, two separate incidents with the latter taking down Jerome Bedeau who was through on goal for the visitors.
Barton found a consolation goal just before their sending off with Ali Aydemir firing into the bottom left corner. It wasn't enough though with Golcar winning 4-1 and advancing into the third round of the Northern Counties East League League Cup.
The draw for the next round is yet to be done with a few ties needing to be played. Next up for Golcar United is a home game against Frickley Athletic on Saturday 18th October. Your support is always appreciated.
Up the Village!
