MATCH REPORT | Golcar United vs Eccleshill United (H)

Emphatic Golcar produce stellar display to ensure 4-0 win

It was exactly 80 days since the last home league win, partly due to a waterlogged pitch but also an end-of-year struggle, as the first home game of 2026 arrived at The Skye Direct Stadium.

With an important and dynamic away win at the weekend, beating Thackley 5-2, The Weavers rose a place in the table and moved three points clear of the drop zone.

Home games, under the lights especially, always produce and so did this one.

Key to the weekend victory was Ashley Flynn, who since returning has three in three - and that quickly became four in four.

Great work down the right resulted in a cross to the back post and Flynn was the beneficiary.

In prime position, he took a touch and fired beyond a flailing Oliver Riva who was given no chance by the power of Flynn's strike.

An expressive start for The Weavers, flaunting a newfound confidence which was personified by Kiero Lawrence in the 15th minute.

The former forward brought out those old tricks from centre back, skipping past one, two, three Eccleshill players before striking with his left foot just wide of the far post.

A second was coming and the pressure told when sloppy defending of a low ball across the area meant it deflected to the adventurous full-back Kallum Reid.

He was right on the goal line to tap home his first of the season and give Golcar a two-goal lead, with 30 minutes on the clock.

A huge factor in the strong February start has been the return of silky midfielder Oliver Russon.

His ability to dribble through and around Eccleshill's staunch backline played a leading role in the opening two goals.

And just before the break he got one of his own.

In similar fashion to the first goal, a cross from the right-hand side came all the way to the back post where Russon waited to finish, making it 3-0 to Golcar at half-time.

Joe Skarz's side were after more though and a revved up second half start resulted in a fourth for Golcar.

A series of corners were well dealt with by The Eagles, but one fell at the back post for Oliver Russon.

He did well to pull the ball back to the edge of the area setting up Alfie Wilkinson, who struck first time and fired well past Riva before he could react.

The Weavers continued to threaten a fifth for the remainder of the half.

George Doyle missed a penalty won by terrific work from Jerome Bedeau.

He was unlucky again when Reid's cross to the back post was just too heavy for him, as he got a touch on it but not enough to turn it goalward.

With a minute of normal time to go, Will Morrisey thought he had got his second of the season, tapping in at the back post, but the linesman's flag halted his celebrations.

All in all February has been a turning point for Golcar, that's now nine goals in two games and six points from six.

They also climbed another place in the table in the process.

Next up, Golcar host Bottesford Town at The Skye Direct Stadium on Saturday where hopefully the goals can continue to fly in!
