MATCH REPORT | Golcar United vs Leeds UFCA (H) West Riding County Cup

Late surge propels Weavers into Quarter Finals

With no wins in six, a County Cup Second Round against lower league opposition hopefully provided the chance to go further in a cup competition and give more confidence to help veer us from danger in the league.

There were lots of changes to both sides' previous elevens. For Golcar, George Doyle and Will Morrissey both dropped out of the squad where Jerome Bedeau and Alfie Wilkinson were named on the bench.

16-year-old Jack Steele made his third start, impressing in his opening two and Rion Arbouin came into the team in a new role at right back.

Golcar began the better, early efforts from Daniel Naidole came close to an opener but they just missed the mark.

The visitors quickly found their feet in the contest and nearly found an opener themselves when a ball flashed across the box and came to Junayd Cassius-Gill at the back-post but it was well cut out by the young Golcar backline.

Halfway through an even first half, UFCA's top-scorer Omar Sanyang started showing his quality.

On one occasion the forward used his pace to latch onto a ball in behind before having an effort saved by Harry Stead. Then he drove infield from the right and chopped past Steele before Kiero Lawrence slid in to block a goalward effort.

Eventually the breakthrough came Golcar's way.

A beautifully swung in corner was diverted into the goal by a UFCA defender giving a valuable goal to Skarz's men.

And that was it until the break, a competitive first half swung the way of The Weavers.

The start of the second flipped that script.

With their first attack of the second period UFCA levelled up the tie when William Horkin drove through the heart of midfield and let fly from 25 yards. This effort was deflected and looped over Steady and into the back of the net.

Things went and got worse for The Weavers, and quickly. Edward Tordoff added another to the visitors tally for the evening just seven minutes later.

This prompted action from Skarz, bringing on forward Wilkinson for Naidole in an attempt to push his side further up the pitch.

Quickly after, Golcar had UFCA on the backfoot hurling in dangerous crosses which were well defended, especially by their captain at the back Adam Jones.

Various chances were spurned in this period of the game, the best falling to Rakealan Jeffers after a pinpoint delivery from Rion Arbouin, the winger scuffed his volleyed effort which limped into the goalkeeper's arms.

It took Rico Kilbourn's wand of a left foot to dip a free-kick over the wall and into the back of the net, even getting a hand from Jackson in the UFCA goal.

At this point the supporters at The Skye Direct were getting ready for penalties, Golcar had other ideas.

A switch from left to right gave Rion, who'd enjoyed a strong game at right-back, time to deliver another pinpoint ball into the box which this time was met by Romario Dunkley who headed, or shouldered, it home across goal and into the far corner.

Delirium in the stands as a late goal went our way for once and a Quarter Final awaits.

The opponents are set to be Route One Rovers who overcame Silsden 1-0 in their Second Round tie.

They are also holders of the competition, beating The Village last year in the final.

Until then we'll look forward to seeing you at The Skye Direct for our league game against Rossington Main on Saturday.

Up The Village!
