MATCH REPORT | Golcar United vs Liversedge (A)

Jack Howarth21 Mar - 11:30

The Weavers earn an impressive point against newly crowned champions!

After our 3-0 defeat to Barton Town on Tuesday, which ended our unbeaten streak at home since October, Golcar made the short journey to the Northern Counties East League Premier Division champions Liversedge.

With a big task on our hands against a side who haven't lost at home all season and with only one defeat since the start of August, The Village has to rise to the occasion.

They did just that.

It was a cagey opening ten minutes for Golcar, as The Sedge took early control of the proceedings with a plethora of corners and some shots from distance that were bravely blocked to keep the score line level pegging.

However, the first real chance of the evening fell to Harvey Booth, who from a corner found the ball at the back post but his volleyed effort crashed into the side netting.

Rico Kilbourn looked to be lively in the first half hour, where he was a key outlet on the break. He had a half chance around the 25th minute mark, where he dragged an effort from outside the area wide. The winger managed to create many crossing opportunities but just couldn't find a green shirt in the middle.

Just before the close of the half, Finn Donovan broke the deadlock with a driven shot from the left hand side. He managed to bag his 8th of the season and took it really well, leaving The Weavers a goal behind at the break.

The old saying that football is a game of two halves rang true at the Clayborn Ground.

Straight from the start, Golcar looked to get themselves back level. Will Morrissey had a decent chance at the back post from a Oliver Russon corner but his effort was blocked in the six yard box.

Not long after, The Weavers made their early pressure count as George Doyle produced a lovely finish to level the game. His strike partner Ashley Flynn flicked the ball round a corner and Doyle took a great touch before producing a sublime finish to make the game 1-1.

Straight after the goal, Alfie Wilkinson latched onto a loose ball around 30 yards out, decided to hit it first time and unlucky for the midfielder his effort smashed off the post. The keeper was left stranded and somehow the strike didn't find the net.

For the final 30 minutes, it was anybody's game. End to end action from both sides, but nobody could take their chances.

The biggest chance of the came for the champions, which made Harry Stead produce an absolute pearler of a save in the 90th minute. A volleyed effort was rocketed in the direction of the goalkeeper and at full stretch he gets a hand to the ball which bounces over him onto the crossbar and somehow back into his hands. For anyone not at the game, just imagine Gordon Banks vs Brazil.

It ended all square, with Golcar earning a very solid point on the road adding to our strong end to the campaign.

We are set to face Albion Sports on Tuesday back at the Skye Direct Stadium, and with your support we will be looking to build on our point yesterday. It would be great to see as many of you as possible there.

Thank you to those who made the trip yesterday to back us, you support is always greatly appreciated!

Up The Village!
