MATCH REPORT | Golcar United vs Ramsbottom United (H) FA Cup

Ramsbottom United advance in FA Cup despite determined Golcar effort

Following last week's 2-1 loss to Campion AFC, a renewed sense of optimism was felt prior to kick-off at The Skye Direct Stadium, with the opportunity to hopefully begin an FA Cup run against Ramsbottom United.

The North West Counties Premier Division side had won both of their openers, so they were coming into this tie with confidence.

The game began much like last week: scrappy.

Rather summed up by an incident where a corner was seemingly given for no reason as the ball sat in Harry Stead's arms, rows of bemused faces filled the stands until it became apparent it was down to the new rule requiring goalkeepers to release the ball within 8 seconds, luckily nothing came of this.

Both teams were misplacing passes, but The Weavers were playing with more energy and drive and created a good chance through a cross from the right-hand side which was flicked on by Ryan Hall for Symeon Corion to hit, but it went flying over the bar.

This piece of action livened the game up a little bit, and 15 minutes before the break The Rams took the lead when a dubiously given free-kick was headed home at the near post by Matthew Dudley.

Half-time came just as Golcar needed it, given a good end to the half for Ramsbottom following their opener.

Whatever Golcar manager Joe Skarz said at the break worked, as his side came out aggressively battling for every second ball.

Chances were coming, and the biggest dropped to substitute Harvey Oddy who didn't know much about a pacy cross from the left-hand side but managed to divert it just beyond the near post.

The Weavers were encouraged and looking lively but a red card for Toby Stennett in the 82nd minute would make things difficult, and it did as Ramsbottom United doubled the lead through Luke Sephton, with little time to go.

Golcar showed tremendous grit and determination to battle back into the game with a Ryan Hall screamer, but unfortunately it wasn't enough.

Our FA Cup campaign came to an end as Ramsbottom went through winning 2-1.
