MATCH REPORT | Golcar United vs Thackley AFC (H) - Alfie's Match

Jack Howarth27 Sep - 17:30

A dominant Golcar display ends in 0-0 draw.

Before we talk football, we need to talk about something much bigger. Today's game was in honour of Alfie Firth, one of our young fans who tragically passed away recently.

We would like to place on record our thanks to all 489 fans who attended todays fixture and paid tribute to Alfie's life and memory. The minute applause before the game was observed beautifully.

We'd also like to thank, once again, Thackley AFC for their kind gestures throughout the week, your entire club are a credit to the footballing world.

On top of the £3,500 raised on the GoFundMe page, we also raised £2,170 at today's game for Alfie's family.

Thank you all so much for your support and love.

Now onto the football.

The game itself was dominated by Golcar. The Weavers set the tone for the afternoons proceedings immediately, when Ryan Wadsworth's effort from 5 yards out was saved by Liam Wilson in the Thackley nets.

We just had the opposite of the Midas touch today, every attempt just wouldn't find its way in.

Wadsworth was central to a lot of the good work in the first half, the most notable of which came from a free kick which was won superbly by Jerome Bedeau. With the ball positioned on the outside of the box, Wadsworth just couldn't get the ball to drop enough, seeing his effort rattle off the bar.

Wilson shone throughout the game for the visitors, making some key interventions. The best of which came around the half hour mark, where George Doyle brought down the ball with his chest, laying it off to Alfie Wilkinson. Wilkinson volleyed towards goal but the keeper used every inch of his body.

With the game goalless at half time, both sides came out battling, leading to a scrappy opening five minutes. After that however, it was all one way traffic in the favour of The Village.

Doyle had the first real key chance as he met one of Wadsworth's wicked crosses at the back post, his header looped over the keeper and looked destined to hit the back of the net, but it just bounced wide.

Zach Rushworth came off the bench in the 83rd minute and almost immediately made an impact, as he found himself one on one with the goalkeeper but his effort narrowly sailed over the bar.

The return of fan favourite Callum Petch helped bolster our attack in the second half who was influential during his time on the pitch.

Arguably, the biggest chance of the game fell to Petch. He rounded the goalkeeper in the last minute of normal time, it looked certain that our habit of conceding late was about to be flipped on its head. Sadly, Petch just took the ball that tad bit wide making the angle tighter than he'd have hoped, getting his shot away slamming into the post.

The game ended all square and the points shared, meaning the Weavers have picked up 9 points across September out of a possible 18.

We now find ourselves in 17th position and two points from the drop zone.

We're next in action at home to Tadcaster Albion on Friday 3rd October, so make sure to get down and cheer the lads onto a much needed victory.

As always, thank you for your support.

Up The Village!
