Golcar United crashed out of the NCEL League Cup with a 3-0 loss against Silsden in their Quarter Final clash at the Skye Direct Stadium.
The visitors showed their class as in truth, they dominated the vast majority of the game whilst The Weavers weren’t quite at the races.
From the off, Silsden was the most threatening team. Within 2 minutes, they hit the post as Luke Brooksbank cut inside from his left-wing position and fired a low shot that struck Harry Stead’s near post.
Within 10 minutes, Silden took the lead. A ball down the left channel found Robbie Fox, who evaded a tackle from Kiero Lawrence, and his driving run into the box resulted in an unselfish decision to square the ball to Tom Greaves, who tapped it in from 12 yards out.
The Village struggled to gain control of the ball, and they did not display much of the great passages of play that we have seen them do in recent weeks. Losing second balls and sloppy passes were prominent throughout the game in an out-of-character display by Ashley and Gavin Connor's men.
Greaves could have had a hattrick by half time but two impressive saves by Stead just before the interval kept Golcar still in the tie.
Silsden made another fast start in the second half as within a minute of kick-off, Fox’s effort on the left side of the 18-yard box was parried away by Stead at his near post.
It was after that chance that Golcar showed a brief glimmer of what had put them in automatic promotion contention. They pinned Silsden back and had a couple of half chances as Calum Petch’s effort was saved by Callum Bradbury whilst a few minutes later, Alfie Wilkinson found some space on the edge of the box, but he dragged his effort wide.
However, after the hour mark, it was once again all Silsden as Golcar committed more men forward in the hopes of finding an equaliser. Cody Cromack’s curling effort hit the top of the crossbar, whilst Fox had another powerful strike saved by Stead.
Eventually, Fox made it third time lucky by finally getting the better of Stead. A beautiful ball by Ross Daly down the right channel found Silsden’s number 10 through on goal, and his lofted effort sailed over Stead and into the back of the net.
The second goal killed off the tie, but The Cobbydalers still had time for one more. Greaves got his second of the game by capitalising on a slip by Lawrence to race through on goal, and he poked the ball past Harry Stead.
The Weavers will be looking to bounce back from their exit from the cup as they return to league action against the already-relegated Winterton Rangers on Saturday (15th March).
The next time we are at the Skye Direct Stadium is in another cup game as we host Pontefract Colliers in a West Riding County Cup Semi-Final clash next Tuesday (18th March).
