Weavers romp to six goal victory

A combined eleven goals in League Cup action midweek for Golcar and visitors Frickley — as both advanced — had stoked hope for an entertaining Saturday afternoon, and it duly delivered.

It had also been eleven days since The Weavers' last outing, when we travelled over The Humber to hammer league title challengers Barton Town.

Perhaps given this break, some rustiness from the start could've been understood, but when Rico Kilbourn drove a ball across the box and it looped in via a miskick from Katsere, it set the tone for a good day at the office.

The lads were sharp and crisp from the start, playing through the thirds and a feature was the switch from right to left giving Kilbourn the opportunity to work his magic again and again.

The second goal, ten minutes later, came from the other side. Following Callum Petch's Cup brace his confidence was evident and he delivered a pearler into the 6-yard box where joint top scorer (now clear top scorer) George Doyle waited to head superbly into the far corner, somehow generating enough power and accuracy from a good distance out, to beat Frickley keeper William Sykes.

Joe Skarz will have been a bit disappointed his side couldn't grab a third before the break with plenty of chances to do so, the best coming from Rico Kilbourn again whose two crosses caused pinball in the Frickley penalty area but somehow weren't poached home.

The Blues had some chances of their own forcing Stead into a few interventions but it was a well deserved lead for The Weavers at the break.

A new kick-off tactic was displayed as the referee blew to begin the second half with Daniel Naidole flicking up and volleying over the Frickley defence.

It bounced towards the edge of the area, and goalkeeper Sykes struggled to hold it. After several blocked efforts, Rushworth eventually tapped home to make it 3-nil.

That was the forward's third goal of the season against the visitors, following his brace at The Westfield Lane Stadium last month.

The points were surely wrapped up, you would've thought, for Golcar but The Village were relentless, continuing to create and added another through Kilbourn cutting inside on his weaker right foot and curling to get a beautiful and richly deserved goal.

Doyle decided one screamer wasn't enough and fifteen minutes from time, used Rico's blueprint to curl into the corner from twenty-five yards getting his trademark 2, 2, 2.

That still wasn't enough for the number nine who made it 3, 3, 3 and 6, 6, 6 for Golcar, tapping in at the back-post from a corner.

It capped off a 10/10 performance from the lads - every player producing a magnificent display- and secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season.

Two home games under the lights next week finish off October, with Wombwell Town on Tuesday night and league leaders Liversedge on Friday night.

We hope to see as many of you there as possible, Up The Village!
