Match Report: Winterton Rangers 0 Golcar United 3

Ellis Mould-Lowe15 Mar - 21:18

An early Callum Petch opener and a George Doyle brace gave The Weavers a confidence booster ahead of a crucial week.

That was more like it.

Golcar United returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory away to Winterton Rangers.
Callum Petch opened the scoring within 10 minutes and two George Doyle goals on either side of halftime gave Golcar a big boost ahead of a crucial week.

The Weavers dominated the entirety of the game against a chirpy Winterton side that had their captain Clayton Bryant sin-binned, and both of their managers sent off in separate incidents.

It didn’t take long for Golcar to open the scoring. Callum Petch capitalised on a calamitous error by Winterton’s goalkeeper, Ryan Musselwhite, as his standing foot contacted the ball as he was about to clear it, and Petch tapped the ball into the vacant net.

The already relegated Winterton struggled to contain Nicky Clee throughout the game and halfway through the first half, his cutback on the byline found George Doyle on the edge of the box, but his effort went wide.

Not long after that, Bryant received his sin-bin but Golcar did not create much in the 10 minutes when they had a man advantage. However, it wasn’t long after Clayton re-joined the game that Golcar had a second.

Kiero Lawrence did well to intercept the ball in the final third and his fantastic ball found its way to Doyle, who was brought down in the box and gave the referee no choice but to give a penalty. The man who won the penalty converted it just before the interval.

Despite scoring fewer goals in the second half than they did in the first 45, Golcar played better after the break. Sharp passing and intricate play were a regular feature throughout the half for The Village, whilst the hosts barely bothered Harry Stead.

Doyle got his second of the game just before the hour mark. Clee and Oli Russon linked up well on the left, and the latter whipped the ball into a great area for our number nine to flick his effort from the near post past Musselwhite to get his eighth goal in the past six league games.

Doyle did have more chances throughout the second period which could have resulted in him walking off the pitch with the match ball. Five minutes into the half, a clever flick by Joe Clegg found its way to Doyle but his effort from the left side of the box was scooped past the far post.

Then five minutes after his goal, he had another chance supplied by Clegg. This time, our number 8 took advantage of some lackadaisical play by a Winterton defender on the right side, who then found Doyle on the edge of the box, but he blazed his effort over the bar.

However, what mattered most was that Doyle continued his good form with his brace and his hold-up play was also brilliant, winning almost every aerial dual against the Winterton center-backs, which pushed The Weavers up the field.

Ashley and Gavin Connor’s men will hope that the result can give them a big lift ahead of two huge fixtures at the Skye Direct Stadium.

First, The Weavers host Pontefract Colliers in the West Riding County Cup Semi-Final on Tuesday (18th March). Then, there is a huge clash to celebrate Non-League Day as we host second-placed Hallam (22nd March).

Goals: Petch (10), Doyle (44, 60).
