After two home victories on the bounce, Golcar travels away this Saturday with victory the only option in hopes of promotion.
With a tough run after Christmas, the Weavers look to be back to winning ways picking up two 4-1 victories on the bounce setting up some good momentum going into the final stretch of the season. Last Saturday it was Clegg at the double, the inform Doyle finding a goal with Ryan Hall on the scoresheet for Golcar. A game of solid defence and attacking flair spearheaded the home side to another win, the visitors Handsworth only finding a late consolation goal.
Struggling side Goole are the hosts this week, with their only four wins of the season coming from home. However, they have the weakest defence in the league, conceding 86 so far this season and scoring just 26, giving Golcar hope that off the back of two high-scoring affairs they can replicate their recent performance. The sides met earlier this season in late October, Golcar picking up a convincing 2-0 victory.
Goole have had their fair share of ups and downs as a club, with evidence of a team dating back to the early 1900s. Goole Town as it was known faced many financial issues, eventually folding in the 1995/96 season. The club reopened with new ownership later that year under the new title Goole AFC.
Achieving promotion in their first season, Goole's second season also provided more success. Promotion to the Northern Counties East League, following a third place spot was topped by two cup victories. The Wakefield Floodlit Cup and the Cox League Cup both travelled to East Yorkshire. On top of that success, a superb run in the Carlsberg F.A. Vase saw Goole get to round four.
The next major occasion for the club came in season 2006/07 when a terrific cup run in the West Riding Cup meant that Goole AFC lifted the trophy for the first time. By 2016, the club became debt-free, though it was relegated in 2018. Goole AFC remains a key part of the town's football history.
After a rough season, will Goole give it one last push in hopes of survival or will Golcars' prolific attack and promotion aspirations prove too much? Up the Village!
